Just as the era of "second wave" black metal came to its end, a group of young Norwegians came together to produce a record that stood out beyond their contemporaries in the scene both in terms of its genre and its storytelling, but also a record that stood above nearly everything else prior in terms of song-writing and musical quality. Ulver are crowned as undisputed kings of Norwegian folk/black with their brilliant debut, a true work of art from start to finish, full of details and resources until then practically unused in this type of music. The most notable thing about the album is the magnificent vocal work of Garm and the acoustic guitars of Haavard. It will not be the wildest and most furious black metal album ever released, but no one beats its originality and bravery, having all the ingredients to be considered a unique and genuine piece of music. This album is genuinely amazing, with nearly every single component being engineered to perfection.
